WI Fair Members Started Their Engines at the 2014 Convention

More than 1,100 delegates representing 68 of 76 county, district and state fairs and associated businesses celebrated the New Year by attending the 91st annual Wisconsin Association of Fairs annual convention in Wisconsin Dells.

Our event kicked off at the Chula Vista Resort on Sunday with a “Carnival Night” sponsored by our carnival industry. More than 500 people attended this event that took place and proved to be successful for the fifth year in a row. Our carnival partners served fair food, gave our carnival prizes and mingled with our fair attendees. Special thanks to the following for sponsoring the event: A & A Attractions, A & C Wenzel Amazements, A & P Enterprise Shows, All Around Amusements, Calkins Midways, Christman Amusements, Earl’s Rides, Happy World Shows, K & M Amusements, Kelly’s Strawberry Concessions, Marquardt, Gary, Mr. Ed’s Magical Midways LLC, North American Midway Entertainment, Rainbow Valley Rides Inc, Spectrum Entertainment, and Tip Top Rides & Attractions.
Special thanks to Chuck and Lynn Waterman from Calkins Midways for coordinating the event.

On Monday, the convention kicked-off with our Keynote Speaker, Jim Tucker, CEO, of the International Association of Fairs and Expositions. Jim Tucker believes fairs are critical to this country’s future. He says they are the "last, best chance" to educate the urban population of Wisconsin and the U.S. about production agriculture. He shared his thoughts about where farming is headed and what he thinks we must showcase at our fairs to remain relevant and viable. Convention attendees wore racing attire on the opening day to celebrate convention theme as the participated in Veggie Races.

Throughout the week representatives attended a variety of high-impact workshops including green initiative, effects of a disease outbreak in your community, building and nurturing media relationships for your fair, food and safety, running successful auctions, how to use the on-line IAFE library, sponsorships, and fairground improvements.

The convention culminated with the awards Banquet and the crowning of the 2014 Wisconsin Fairest of the Fairs on Wednesday night. Awards were given for the V.I.P. Awards, Outstanding Fair Person Awards, Hall of Fame Awards, and the Associate Member Hall of Fame Awards. Many deserving people were awarded, including the 2013 Fairest of the Fair Steffani Koch of the Dodge County Fair before handing the position off to Kaitlyn Riley from the Crawford County Fair. She will spend the next year serving as the ambassador for Wisconsin’s 76 county, district and state fairs and the official hostess for the 2014 Wisconsin State Fair, July 30-August 10. While serving as Wisconsin’s Fairest of the Fairs, Riley will make appearances, conduct promotions, work with media and travel to fairs to promote the educational, social and economic importance of Wisconsin’s Fair Industry.

Thank you to all of our attendees and especially to all of our sponsors for making another successful year possible! Join us next year, January 4-7, 2015, for our 92nd annual convention at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells.
